Plan your solar in 30 seconds.
Four free calculators for solar in Madurai — estimate savings, roof area, battery backup and payback. Indicative only; request a free survey for exact figures.
Estimates use Madurai-average generation of ~4.2 units per kW per day, typical installed cost, and an indicative tariff for the selected property type. Actual figures depend on your site, consumption pattern, roof orientation, shading and prevailing tariff — confirmed in a free survey.
Rooftop solar needs roughly 70–100 sq ft of shadow-free area per kW depending on panel efficiency. Ground-mount needs extra spacing between rows to avoid inter-row shading. Add margin for walkways, parapets, water tanks and service access.
Lithium (LFP) sizing assumes ~90% usable depth of discharge and ~92% round-trip efficiency. Lead-acid usable depth is far lower (~50%), so it needs roughly double the rated capacity for the same backup. A standard grid-tied system cannot run loads during an outage — battery storage or a hybrid inverter is required.
Payback assumes ~4.2 units/kW/day generation for Madurai, ~1.5% annual tariff escalation, and ~0.6% annual panel degradation. Units used on-site save at full tariff; exported units are credited at net-metering value (assumed 75% of tariff here). Confirm your actual tariff and export terms with TANGEDCO.

How do I get a solar quote in Madurai?
Request a free solar site assessment in Madurai by calling +91 94870 19911, emailing apecaf.re@gmail.com, or filling in the form below. We typically respond within one business day.
How much roof area is needed for solar?
As a rule of thumb, each 1 kW of rooftop solar needs roughly 70–100 sq ft of shadow-free roof. A typical 3 kW home system needs about 250–300 sq ft, and a 10 kW system around 700–1,000 sq ft. Our site survey measures your usable, unshaded area precisely before sizing.
What size solar system do I need?
System size is driven by your monthly units (kWh) consumed, available roof or land area, and budget. In Madurai's irradiation, 1 kW generates roughly 4–4.5 units per day on average. We size the system to offset the share of your bill you want to eliminate, and model it against your actual consumption.
Cost, savings & payback
How much does solar in Madurai cost, and what can I save?
Cost depends on system size, roof or land area and your energy use. A well-designed system can typically cut on-site grid spend by around 60%, with an indicative payback of 4–5 years for commercial and industrial installations and 25+ years of generation. Our free site assessment in Madurai models your exact savings.
What affects the payback period?
The main factors are your electricity tariff (higher tariffs pay back faster), system cost, generation at your site, how much of your load is during daylight, net-metering credit for exported units, and any applicable subsidy. Commercial and industrial sites usually pay back faster than residential because of higher tariffs and daytime usage.
Is there a subsidy for rooftop solar?
Eligible residential rooftop systems can qualify for the central rooftop solar subsidy under the national scheme, subject to prevailing rules and DISCOM empanelment. Commercial and industrial systems are not subsidised but benefit from accelerated depreciation. We handle the paperwork and tell you exactly what applies to your case.
Does solar add value and reduce operating cost for businesses?
Yes. For commercial and industrial sites, solar cuts a significant share of a controllable operating expense, hedges against tariff hikes, and qualifies for accelerated depreciation benefits — while supporting sustainability and ESG goals. Many C&I clients see indicative payback within 4–5 years and decades of low-cost generation after.
How solar works
Can solar work during power cuts?
A standard grid-tied system shuts off during a power cut for safety, so it won't run the house during an outage. To keep power flowing during cuts you need a hybrid system with battery storage or a backup-capable inverter — which we design for sites that need outage ride-through.
What is net metering and is it available in Tamil Nadu?
Net metering lets you export surplus solar to the grid and receive credit against the units you draw at night or on cloudy days, so you're billed on your net consumption. It is available in Tamil Nadu through TANGEDCO subject to prevailing regulations and sanctioned load; we manage the application and metering on your behalf.
What happens to extra power my system generates?
With net metering, surplus units are exported to the grid and credited to your account. With a hybrid system, surplus first charges your battery for evening or backup use, and any remaining surplus can be exported. The right mix depends on your usage pattern, which we model in the proposal.
Do solar panels work in cloudy or monsoon weather?
Yes, but at reduced output — panels still generate on overcast days, just less than in full sun. Annual yield estimates already account for Madurai's seasonal and monsoon variation, so the payback and savings figures we quote are based on realistic year-round generation, not peak-day numbers.
How hot does it get, and does heat affect output?
Very high panel temperatures slightly reduce efficiency, which is why proper mounting with airflow and correctly rated components matter in a hot climate like Madurai's. We select temperature-tolerant modules and design for ventilation so real-world generation stays close to the model.
Equipment & lifespan
How long do solar panels last?
Quality solar panels are designed for 25+ years and typically carry a performance warranty guaranteeing around 80–85% of rated output at year 25. Inverters usually last 8–12 years and may be replaced once over the system's life. We use tier-one components so the plant holds its yield for decades.
What's the difference between mono and poly panels?
Monocrystalline panels are more efficient and generate more per square foot, making them ideal where roof space is limited — most modern installs use mono. Polycrystalline panels are slightly cheaper per watt but less efficient. We recommend the right type based on your available area and budget.
String inverter or microinverters — which is better?
String inverters are cost-effective and ideal for unshaded roofs with a uniform layout. Microinverters (or optimisers) cost more but handle shading and complex, multi-orientation roofs better by optimising each panel individually. We choose based on your roof's shading and shape.
What battery options are available for storage?
Lithium (LFP) batteries are now standard for solar storage — longer life (typically 6,000+ cycles), higher usable capacity, compact and low-maintenance. Lead-acid is cheaper upfront but has a shorter life and lower usable depth. For most homes and businesses we recommend lithium for lower cost per usable unit over its life.
Installation & maintenance
How long does a solar installation in Madurai take?
A residential rooftop system in Madurai is usually commissioned within 1–3 weeks of approval, while commercial and industrial projects typically run 4–10 weeks depending on capacity, structural work and grid-synchronisation approvals. We share a fixed schedule with every proposal and hold to it.
What's included in a turnkey solar EPC project?
Five stages under one accountable contract: assess (site survey and generation modelling), engineer (design and structural validation), procure (tier-one components), build (civil, mechanical and electrical execution plus grid synchronisation), and sustain (monitoring, maintenance and performance guarantees).
Will installation damage my roof?
No — mounting structures are engineered to protect the roof. On RCC roofs we use non-penetrating ballasted or properly sealed foundations; on sheet roofs we use gasketed, leak-proof clamps. Our structural design accounts for wind load and waterproofing so the roof stays sound.
What maintenance does a solar system need?
Solar systems are low-maintenance — mainly periodic panel cleaning and inverter checks. Our O&M plans cover remote monitoring, scheduled cleaning and preventive maintenance, with performance guarantees that keep the plant generating at its designed yield for 25+ years.
Do you help with subsidies, net-metering and approvals?
Yes. We handle the full paperwork — net-metering applications with TANGEDCO, structural and electrical approvals, and any applicable rooftop solar subsidy for eligible residential systems — so the process is turnkey from your side.
